WordPress 7.0 is coming soon

Circle your calendar around April 2026. That’s when WordPress 7.0 is scheduled to launch. Where previous updates focused mainly on building your website, version 7.0 throws in the towel.

The focus shifts completely to collaboration. WordPress is changing from a content management system to a full-fledged content creation platform. Here are the five most important changes you can expect.

1. Real-time collaboration (Finally!).

Anyone who has ever worked with a team on a website knows the frustration: ‘This post is currently being edited by…’. You have to wait for your colleague to finish, or “take over” the post and risk losing work.

In WordPress 7.0, this is a thing of the past. We get functionalities familiar from Google Docs:

• Simultaneous work: you can work with multiple people simultaneously in one post or page.
• Live cursors: you can see exactly where your colleague is typing.
• No more “locks”: content is no longer locked.

2. A Professional Editorial Workflow

WordPress is getting much smarter at supporting editors and marketing teams. You no longer have to communicate via Slack or email about your content; you do it in your content.

The new features:

• Comments in text: select a sentence and place a comment, just like in Word.
• @Mentions: tag a colleague (@name) to draw their attention to a specific paragraph.
• Tasks and approvals: assign tasks and set a mandatory approval flow (‘Review required’) before an article can be published.

3. Shaking up the Admin dashboard.

The familiar black-and-gray “WP Admin” dashboard has been largely the same for years. With 7.0, the back end of your website gets a much-needed makeover.

The goal is an interface consistent with the Site Editor: quieter, more modern and faster. This blurs the hard division between “the backend” and “the editor.

4. Improved media and navigation

Two major components are being greatly improved:

1. Media Library: Expect a new interface with better options for creating folders, filtering and organizing your images.
2. Menu management: Managing navigation menus becomes more intuitive and visual, making it less fiddly to get that one submenu item in the right place.

5. A first step toward native multilingualism

Finally, an exciting sneak peek. Although “Multilingualism” is officially only the focus of Phase 4, WordPress 7.0 is already laying the technical foundation.

The long-term goal is for WordPress to be multilingual out-of-the-box. This would mean that heavy external plugins (such as WPML or Polylang) might not be needed for basic translations in the future. A huge win for the performance of your website!
