Keyword research

Find the right keywords
with a keyword research

A keyword research is not the first, but perhaps most important stage in your search engine optimization. By conducting a keyword research, you identify relevant keywords that your (potential) clients are searching for. An essential part of your online marketing strategy.

Have keyword research done

Doing a keyword research yourself requires a lot of time and knowledge. Still, your website can’t do without it. Of course, you can get started yourself with Google Keyword Planner but the accuracy of this tool loses a little bit every year. Because every business wants to rank high on Google’s rankings, competition is fierce. By outsourcing keyword research to professionals who have the right tools and knowledge, you can be sure that your website will rank in Google. And that’s what you do it all for.

We are happy to help you in achieving higher rankings on Google’s rankings with the help of a thorough keyword research. After the keyword research, you will receive a comprehensive analysis from us with several key pillars.

Current positions

How are you currently doing? We’re going to look at that first. After all, why throw away something that works extremely well? We’re going to map out for you which keywords you already rank well for. It is then a breeze to optimize these pages additionally. When a page is already “ranked,” it is much easier to gain positions. Ranking a new page always takes more time. Only after this step do we look at other keywords.

Volume of keywords

It is important to properly distinguish between different keywords. This is because there are keywords that are highly searched for (high search volume) and keywords that are hardly ever searched for (low search volume). Of course, you then want to put everything on keywords with high search volume, but logically, the competition on these keywords is also much higher. It is therefore more difficult to force a prominent spot on Google’s rankings. So the trick here is to find the balance. Do not choose keywords with too low search volume but go for the keywords that are searched for enough and where the competition is not cutthroat. Then chances are, with the help of good keyword research, you will quickly find your way up Google’s rankings.

Keyword difficulty

Cutthroat competition for search engines is a key pillar. We call this competition keyword difficulty: an estimate of how difficult it is to rank in the top 10 organic search results for a search term on a scale of 0-100.

For example, the keyword “jobs” has a keyword difficulty of 76. That’s a tough one to get into the top 3 in search engines. Therefore, we prefer to focus on search terms with higher odds. In a keyword research, we analyze all related searches and check which ones are best for you. You will receive these valuable tips and related searches in a comprehensive report.

What do competitors score on?

Competitors often fish in the same proverbial pond as your company. It is therefore important to understand the keywords on which the relevant competitors are being found. Are there any keywords among them that your company can’t be found on at all? Then it’s time for action. At the very least, you want to give consumers the option of choosing your company or your competitors. If your website cannot be found on a search term, you are already putting your business out of business unnecessarily and your competitors will run off with potential clients.

Authority of your website

Whether or not you will rank for a search term depends largely on your authority. Therefore, building authority for your website is very important. Authority largely determines the reliability of your website with the general public. Companies like Bol.com, for example, have very high authority which means they are often assigned high rankings by Google.

A complete URL structure

This pillar seems somewhat less related to keyword research, but it is duly important. With the results of the keyword research, you can build a complete URL structure for your website with relevant terms. A good URL structure rewards Google with a high ranking in the search engine’s rankings. By properly navigating your website and always linking to another underlying page, you are building the ideal URL structure. 2manydots always takes this into account and, after years of experience, knows exactly how to link through in an organic way.

Added value for SEA

Thus, keyword research largely determines how successful your SEO strategy is. But that thorough keyword research is only beneficial for search engine optimization (SEO) is a fable. In fact, keyword research is also very important for search engine advertising (SEA). When you type in a relevant keyword, you see not only organic results but also ads. By finding important keywords, you can target your ads much more effectively. This way, you can be sure that your ads will actually appear to the target audience you’ve been aiming for. This way you avoid unnecessary campaign costs because your paid ads end up with the wrong target audience.

The tools for keyword research

Keyword research does not come out of the blue. Want to start your own keyword research? To find exactly the right keywords, there are several keyword tools available. We explain two easy tools for you.

Keyword planner

One keyword tool that comes directly from the largest search engine itself is Google Keyword Planner. Therefore, this free tool also extracts the data directly from the search engine and can therefore be considered reliable. One caveat to this tool is that it is primarily set up for SEA; after all, it is not called Google Ads keyword planner for nothing. Still, for beginners, this tool is a godsend in the search for interesting keywords that can be used to achieve a higher SEO score.

Search Console

Your website probably already contains many keywords. It is then advisable to first look at the search terms you (unconsciously) already use in your texts. Chances are you already rank well on certain search terms. It is then a waste to tinker with this. Google’s Search Console is an ideal tool for this. Enter the search terms of your website and see in a report which search terms you can be found on. New keywords are enticing but so look first at what you already have in place. Search Console is a paid tool but it also has free variants. Then you can start focusing on the best keywords for your business.

Types of keywords

There are two different types of keywords. We describe the difference between the length of your keywords. After all, these also determine the success you wish to achieve.

Long tail search terms

The most comprehensive search term of all are the long tail keywords. These are long search terms with often more than three keywords. An example of a long tail search question is: How do you conduct an SEO keyword research? Longer search terms (long tail keywords) will generally have lower search volume than the shorter variants. But when you combine many longer search terms into one text, your SEO score rises faster than when you incorporate only short search terms into your text.

Short tail search terms

The counterpart of long tail search terms is the short tail search term. You don’t have to be very deep into the subject matter to understand that these are short search terms. The advantage of this type of search term is its high search volume. An example of a short tail search term is “keyword. However, it is difficult to be distinctive with these shot tail keywords, as the competition here is much higher than on a lower, specific word.
