Only start link building as the last phase of SEO

As described above, link building is just one part of SEO strategy. An important part, sure, but SEO strategy encompasses so much more. Therefore, first make sure that the technical optimizations are website wide and that the pages to be optimized have valuable content. Only then can link building do its job and provide the results you hope for beforehand.

Create different link types

A natural link profile contains many different link types. For example, by writing a guest blog on an external website, you obtain relevant backlinks. In addition, it can boost your company’s brand awareness. But also consider advertorials or the old familiar home pages that have built up a lot of domain authority over the years and are still passing on value. This makes your link profile versatile and Google appreciates that.

Choose the right anchor texts

An anchor text is the piece of text you see when you link to another page. This piece of text is often boldly colored and clickable. As an example of this, we show you the achor text to our landing page on online marketing. This text is clickable and gets you to the right page. Incorporate the focus keyword into the anchor text. Indeed, in the above example, the focus keyword is “online marketing. But be careful not to over-optimize. So also have the brand name, URL and other alternatives reflected in the anchor text.

No swapping links (ab)

Swapping links penalizes Google immediately. So don’t fall for it when someone knocks on your door asking you to trade links for the purpose of better link building. This seems like an easy way of link building but Google, as so often happens, is once again the smartest one. They see these as non-valuable backlinks, and so you don’t gain anything at all in your link building. In fact, if you do this a lot, it will be penalized and you will just not show up in search results anymore. Waste of your time.

Good domain authority

Authority is a very important concept within link building. This is because a backlink from a domain with high domain authority passes on some of that value. This increases your own domain authority. The higher a website’s authority is, the more value a backlink passes on. In this, it is important that you do not obtain dozens of external links from brand new websites. New websites have not yet had time to build authority. Google then still doubts the value of such a new website so your backlink will not give results. So you prefer quality backlinks from larger and leading websites with high domain authority. If Google sees that many strong domains refer to you, it is an indication that you yourself are a worthy authority in that field.
