What should you start paying attention to in 2025?

Search Engine Optimization(SEO) is the cornerstone of our online marketing service. In an organic way, we help brands achieve top positions in the world’s largest search engine, Google. And while there are many misconceptions about it, SEO is much more than adding the focus keyword. Website technology and authority are at least as important as content.

But SEO also continues to evolve, and Google demands different strategies every year. That’s why we put the 6 biggest SEO trends in 2025 under the magnifying glass.

1. Clustering keywords

Keyword clustering is the grouping of related keywords that share a similar intent or theme. The idea is to place keywords that match in meaning into one group (cluster) and optimize one page or section for it. This makes your content more relevant and complete for users and helps search engines better understand what the page is about.

Keyword clustering means you don’t have to create a separate page for each individual keyword, but can cover broader topics that cover multiple keywords. This approach also helps to increase the authority of your Web site because search engines see that you thoroughly cover a particular topic.

Example

Suppose you have a Web site about mattresses. Instead of creating separate pages for each of the following keywords, you can cluster them and create a comprehensive page about “king mattress.

  • King size mattress
  • King sized mattress
  • King size mattress
  • King mattresess
  • Mattress king

2. Content pruning

Google wants to show its visitors the best and most relevant content. That is their right, but as a result, your content needs to be optimized considerably. Content pruning, freely translated: content pruning, is an important trend for the future and the present.

Perhaps you have been writing blogs on a variety of topics for years. Chances are that these blogs are now outdated. Therefore, take a look at your content and do not hesitate to remove or update outdated or irrelevant pages.

After all, Google only crawls a limited number of pages and you naturally want Google to include the best and most relevant pages. In addition, by pruning content, you also prevent duplicate content. So grab your digital hedge clippers today and start pruning!

3. Use as much stuctured data as possible

We already devoted a blog to it in early 2024, but structured data will become even more important in 2025. Let’s refresh the memory, what exactly is structured data?

Structured data gives search engines a clear table of contents of your website. By adding special tags to your HTML code, you help Google & co better understand and organize your site’s content. This makes your site more user-friendly in search results, but can also lead to that coveted featured snippet. A very detailed explanation of structured data, can be found in the blog mentioned earlier.

Don’t flinch after reading the blog, because there is a lot of information coming at you. Still, adding structured data is easy to do. And should you need help, you know where to find us. But there’s no question that it’s indispensable in your SEO strategy.

4. Short form video

The days of young people getting their news from newspapers are long gone. Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and TikTok are their primary sources of current events. And the videos on these platforms fall into the “short form video” category. Short form videos are often short, vertical videos of up to 60 seconds.

It is likely that Google will show short-form videos in search results by 2025. Google has already taken steps in this direction by incorporating YouTube Shorts into search results. With these videos, Google wants to give their users quick and visual answers to their searches.

Therefore, start working with short form videos yourself. Add them to your structured data and post them in a blog. Google will appreciate it and for the visitors, it is also super convenient.

5. Focus on SERP features

Focusing on featured snippets in your SEO strategy is important because they increase your visibility and click rate. This “position 0” gives your content extra attention at the top of search results. Snippets also strengthen your authority, as users see them as trusted sources.

In addition, they help with voice search optimization, as many voice search queries draw on featured snippets. By adding clear answers, structured content and FAQ sections, you increase your chances of appearing in a snippet. Thus, with targeted optimization, you can outrank competitors even without having the No. 1 position in search results.

Below is an example of a featured snippet from 2manydots

6. E-E-A-T

With the advent of artificial intelligence, it is possible for anyone to post dozens of texts and blogs a day. This bothers Google, because they want to serve their readers only the most relevant content. And when Google is inconvenienced by something, they quickly look for a solution: E-E-A-T.

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness. Run these terms through Google Translate and you actually know exactly what is meant by them. Google rewards your blog when you put real time, effort and knowledge into it. Only with that kind of valuable content can they keep their readers happy.

So, while it’s tempting to have entire blogs written by ChatGPT, Google thinks it’s important that we do our own research and pen down our findings ourselves.

7. Focus on Local SEO remains important

Another strategy we’ve touched on in an earlier blog. Local SEO is especially important for local businesses or agencies with target audiences from certain regions. In fact, nearly half (46%) of all searches have a local search intent, and that’s what you want to be found on.

For example, do you own a bookstore in Tilburg? Then you want to be found on local search results such as ‘bookstore Tilburg’. If people from Tilburg are looking for a bookstore, chances are they will enter ‘boekenwinkel Tilburg’ on Google. In addition, you avoid targeting an audience that is not suitable for your bookstore. After all, how likely is it that someone from West-Friesland will visit your bookstore in Tilburg?

A detailed explanation of local search and how to apply it can be found in this blog.

And, of course, the existing SEO guidelines!

Can everything else be let go now? No! These are just trends for the coming year that you can capitalize on perfectly with the help of this blog. Quality backlinks, relevant keywords and making sure your content is optimized will always remain important points. Therefore, do not abandon the existing SEO guidelines, but simply add these trends to your strategy.
